Steel Rebirth – Larkin Street Project
Perched just above the famously curvy Lombard Street in the heart of San Francisco, a small peach stucco house once sat. The home lacked most modern efficiencies and was in need of various improvements and repairs.
The high cost for renovations created an option to build a new home with cutting edge technology, fire resistant exterior, and all bolted steel frame. Architecture firm Walker and Moody was given the task of creating a truly custom home for the constrained site location.
Altus Development has embarked on the project to build the six story home amid the dense urban jungle.
Deconstructing the existing home requires unmatched accuracy to ensuring no damage to the surrounding buildings. The new prefabricated steel home will be squeezed between neighboring structures, and in some cases there is only 3” of clearance.
The existing home is being deconstructed, as opposed to demolished, to be as environmentally friendly as possible and ensure safety of the neighboring buildings. Once the site is cleared construction can begin.
